Lorena A. Barba
Dr. Lorena A. Barba is a professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and International Affairs, and the Faculty Director of the GW Open Source Program Office (OSPO). Her interests are computational fluid dynamics, computational biophysics, high-performance computing, computational reproducibility, and open science. She has a long track record of educational innovation and contributions to open education, which was recognized by the 2016 Leamer-Rosenthal Award for Open Social Sciences, and an honorable mention in the Open Education Awards for Excellence of the Open Education Consortium in 2017. In the subject of open-source software, she is well known for her leadership as a member of the board of directors (2014–2021) of NumFOCUS, a 501(c)3 public charity providing fiscal sponsorship and operational support to many impactful open-source software projects, particularly in the scientific Python ecosystem. She was named a Jupyter Distinguished Contributor in 2020, was founding editor (2016–2021) of The Journal of Open Source Software, was editor-in-chief of IEEE Computational Science and Engineering (2020–2023), and is editor-in-chief (and founder) of The Journal of Open Source Education.
